Christian Fennell

... is an editor, a writer of fiction and non-fiction, whose work often explores the fragility of the human condition and the search for identity in an uncertain world. His writing is known for its lyrical qualities and its mix of realism with elements that border on the surreal.  He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of The Nelligan Review, and is the Senior Editor at Montreal Publishing Company.

Christian grew up in Muskoka, Ontario, developing a love of reading, writing, and the outdoors. Today, he is pretty much nomadic, who just might do some more writing. Certainly, some good living, reading, and exploring. He dislikes humans that discriminate against others, and he asks of you, please don't do this.

"One’s life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others, by means of love, friendship, indignation, compassion." ~ Simone de Beauvoir

For I am you, torn from our scars.

Fennell views fiction as a tool to reach deeper truths—beyond the constraints of rational, objective thinking, and storytelling. The joy in reaching to the truth in writing, is having the faith to trust that it can be found,  provided one looks to pulse of blood running through the veins of thought, and not to the meaning of it.

Writing Process: Prefers early mornings, no strict outlines, edits as he writes.

Creative Sparks: Works emerge from the unknown, or fragments of life—mostly shaping a story organically.

Thematic Focus: Explores reality vs perception, ideological turmoil, and essence over meaning.

Advice: Forget the rules—write, rewrite, and learn by doing., and embrace the idea that what make you unique, is your strength.

Inspiration: Influenced by abstract, poetic work like Sheila Watson's The Double Hook.

Current Focus: Expanding writing - what it is; what it can be.

Public Voice: Engages with political and cultural moments passionately, and unapologetically.

Writing Philosophy: Reaches to essence, seeking truth through intuitive storytelling, while letting go of rigid meaning.

Life in Fiction: Incorporates personal elements—like his children—into characters, blending reality with art.

"The person who lies to themselves and listens to their own lie comes to such a pass that they cannot distinguish the truth within them, or around them, and so loses all respect for themselves and for others." - Fyodor Dostoevsky
